The History of Brewing in Wisconsin

October 21 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The Door County Historical Society will host its monthly dinner program, “The History of Brewing in Wisconsin,” presented by Jerry Janiszewski, on Monday, October 21, at 6:00 pm at the Sturgeon Bay Moravian Church.

Jerry will discuss how the European immigrants of the nineteenth century used their farming and brewing skills to build frontier farm breweries. The presentation will include details about how the local environment led Wisconsin to become a brewing powerhouse and created its Beer Barons. He will also share stories of how Prohibition affected the local brewing companies.

Jerry has been passionate about visiting breweries, studying and writing about the history of brewing, and collecting “Breweriana”. He started lecturing on the topic six years ago, after he retired as a sales and marketing executive. It is a hobby that Jerry says “provides an excellent opportunity to travel and meet interesting people that enjoy sharing their stories about the brewing industry”.

In the summer Jerry volunteers at Old World Wisconsin where he provides Historic Brewing Demonstrations from the 1860s.  He is the Vice President of the American Breweriana Association, The National Brewery Museum Foundation, and has served as a docent at the Pabst Mansion in Milwaukee. Jerry is also a member of the North American Guild of Beer Writers and has composed an article titled “Brewskis with Janiszewski” for several publications.

The Monday October 21 dinner will be Swiss steak, salad with apples and maple vinaigrette, Jell-O, mashed potatoes and gravy, braised red cabbage, rolls and butter, bread pudding with citrus sauce, and beverages. The price is $22 for members, $25 for guests. This program is at the Sturgeon Bay Moravian Church located at 323 South 5th Street, Sturgeon Bay. Make your reservation by sending payment to the Door County Historical Society, P.O. Box 71, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235. The reservation deadline is Monday, October 14; space is limited.
