Summertime has arrived at Heritage Village and we are excited to welcome you for another season filled with history, learning, and community.
A treasured part of the Door County Historical Society, Heritage Village officially opened its 2025 season on Saturday, May 31 and will be open to the public Wednesday through Sunday from 11pm – 4:00pm.
This season, we’re offering a full lineup of interpretive programs designed to educate and engage visitors of all ages. Thursdays will focus on children’s programming, while select Saturdays will feature guest speakers and special presentations for history enthusiasts.
Our programs are free with admission, and while some may require registration to ensure materials are available, there is no additional cost to attend.
Explore the Village
Nestled near the scenic Big Creek Preserve, Heritage Village features a collection of historic buildings from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Tour the Vignes Schoolhouse, Heritage Chapel, and the Warren and Schopf houses, each authentically restored and furnished. Don’t miss the blacksmith shop, Madden Tool Museum, or the always-popular Greene General Store, now fully stocked with new books, treats, and handcrafted items, including products from Washington Island’s Sweet Mountain Farm.

July Highlights
July is shaping up to be an exciting month at the Village. Highlights include, a presentation on historic family jewelry, a book signing with Michaela Kraft, editor of Door County’s First People, and our beloved Root Beer Festival on Saturday, July 12.
Make plans to join us for Root Beer Fest on July 12 from 10am – 3pm, where you can enjoy frothy root beer floats, sample a flight of unique root beer varieties, and interact with our interpreters across the Village. It’s a fun and flavorful event for the whole family!

New Enhancements and Ongoing Projects
This season brings exciting updates to the Village experience. A new permanent exterior signage project, funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), will introduce interactive signs with visual, auditory, and tactile features, enhancing access and understanding for all visitors.
Also, preservation and maintenance projects are underway, including painting and repairing the Heritage Chapel, upgrading sump pumps in historic structures, window repair in the Schopf and Warren houses, and landscaping between buildings to improve accessibility and safety.

We’re also grateful for the continued success of our Building Sponsorship Program. Many of our structures are now supported by generous community sponsors, but three buildings remain available for sponsorship—a meaningful way to support the Village’s preservation and growth. If you are interested in sponsoring the Warren House, the Peterson Granary, or the Privy let us know!
