From the Keeper’s Desk – June 27

Greetings!

Josh and Deion did an acid cleaning of the brick on the privy. Looking really good. They were doing more tuckpointing on the oil house. They finished whitewashing the basement wall in the smaller basement room. Then it was on to painting the inside of the privy. Cannot imagine the last time it was painted. It is looking bright and fresh.

Billy made a fake door for the hayloft to give the barn a historic touch. While Billy was doing that Mike was installing the doors for the summer kitchen. Later Mike and Billy took the scaffolding down that was around the barn. They finished off the day’s work installing framing trim around the summer kitchen doors and installing the azek starter siding at the bottom of the summer kitchen. Azek is a plastic type of board that can have ground and water contact and will not rot.

Chuck did some organizing in the lighthouse basement.

Just wondering…since we are newer members, we have no context to understand what we are seeing. Are these two contractors that our contributions are paying for? Or are they volunteers who are doing this work on the lighthouse properties gratis? Hard work is appreciated no matter what! 🙂
    Thanks!

    1. A great question, Mary Lou! In 2022, we launched a capital campaign with an initial goal of $3 million to support this multi-phased restoration project. Since then, the project scope has evolved, and thanks to the generous contributions of volunteers who have donated their time and expertise, we’ve been able to reduce overall costs. The project is now estimated at $2 million. To date, we’ve raised $1.6 million toward that goal. These campaign contributions are designated specifically for this project and are separate from general donations and the Door County Historical Society’s day-to-day operating funds.
