From the Keeper’s Desk – August 22

Greetings!

It has been an amazing week at Eagle Bluff Light Station.

Jude and crew arrived Monday to tear out the old sidewalk start setting forms for the new sidewalks. Form setting continued on Tuesday. Wednesday was the big day when concrete was poured. The sidewalks and the stamped concrete “plank boards” on the barn ramp look spectacular.

JF construction was onsite Wednesday to work on the river rock borders around the lighthouse. Mike and Billy placed the pressure treated wood edging for the border.

Thursday JF Construction filled the borders around the lighthouse, barn and summer kitchen. Bryson with help from Blair did grading to solve drainage issues to make water flow away from the summer kitchen and the lighthouse.

Friday saw covering the area with screened topsoil for seeding new grass. We are now waiting for the landscaper to plant grass seed.

Monday and Tuesday Josh and Deion painted the lighthouse tower steps taking advantage of the lighthouse being closed to visitors. That way the paint had several days to cure before being walked on. They also painted the hand railing. No more rusty paw prints on the white tower walls.

Josh Fletcher was here Tuesday to take the lower window sashes to their fabricator to turn them into divided light sashes to match the upper sashes. He is hoping for a turnaround time of two to three weeks.

Today Chuck modified the Plexiglas in the second floor windows to allow for a screen at the bottom. He put clear sealer on window stops for the inside second floor window openings at the barn stair well. The stops are needed for Plexiglas to be installed in the openings. Chuck also put yellow tape along the sidewalk to try and keep people on the sidewalk and off the topsoil.

As there was no machinery operating along the sidewalk we were able to allow visitors access to the lighthouse and stone wall at about 11 am. The visitors I talked to were really impressed with all we have done. The west entrance to the parking lot was opened after JF Construction left with their equipment a little after noon.

Daulton was checking inventory in the gift shop today. The lighthouse is ready to be reopened Saturday morning.

Thanks to everyone who made this possible! It has been a long time coming. Spectacular!!! Who would have thought!

Ed
