Take the Plunge into Door County History: The Story of the Jacksonport Polar Bear Club

We’re wrapping up our 2025 Dine & Discover season with a program that’s sure to make a splash! Join us on Monday, November 24, at Prince of Peace Church in Sturgeon Bay as we welcome the Jarosh family—J.R., Jon, Sue, and Joe—to share the incredible story of the Jacksonport Polar Bear Club.

Parking will be available in the N. 18th Avenue lot, with additional spaces in the Michigan Street lot.

The Jacksonport Polar Bear Club began in 1986. That’s when 14-year-old J.R. Jarosh dove into the icy waters of Lake Michigan—alone. That bold leap sparked a local tradition that now draws 500 to 800 swimmers each year, making it one of the largest polar bear events in the country.

During the evening, the Jarosh family will take us behind the scenes of this iconic Door County event. They’ll share stories about how a small-town swim turned into a national sensation—featured in a Subway commercial, the Door County–filmed movie Feed the Fish, and even a Guinness Beer TV ad. One highlight came when participants attended the outdoor premiere of Ice Age at the Mall of America, where 20th Century Fox provided a bus and ice-block seating!

From the start, the Jarosh family has led this effort, ensuring the event benefits the Jacksonport Fire Department. In 2025, the fire department officially took over organizing the annual dip, continuing to uphold the safety and spirit that define the event.

Guests will enjoy dinner catered by Scaturo’s Baking Co. Café, featuring lemon pepper chicken, stuffed shells, salad, mashed potatoes, brownies, cookies, coffee, and water. The cost is $35 for members and $40 for nonmembers. Reservations are due by November 17 and can be made online, by mail, in person, or through our office.

Don’t miss this chance to connect with fellow history enthusiasts, enjoy a great meal, and celebrate one of Door County’s most spirited traditions.
