Door County’s history is waiting to be discovered—and it all begins next Monday.
The History Days 2026 Kick-Off Event takes place on Monday, June 15, at 10:00 a.m. at Heritage Village in Sturgeon Bay, launching a week-long celebration of the people, places, and events that have shaped Door County and our nation.
This year’s theme, America at 250, invites us to reflect on the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and explore how its ideals have influenced Door County’s history, communities, and way of life.

The free Kick-Off Event will feature a keynote presentation by Eric Morgan, UW–Green Bay history professor and Editor-in-Chief of Voyager Magazine. Morgan will discuss how the principles outlined in the Declaration of Independence have shaped Door County’s past and continue to influence our communities today.
Following the presentation, visitors can meet representatives from historical and cultural organizations throughout the county, learn about upcoming programs, and explore Heritage Village’s historic buildings. Guests can watch demonstrations in the Blacksmith Shop, try historic tools in the Madden Tool Museum, enjoy refreshments, and discover new ways to connect with local history.
But the Kick-Off Event is just the beginning.
From June 15 through June 21, museums, historical societies, cultural organizations, and heritage sites across Door County will host special exhibits, guided tours, presentations, hands-on activities, and unique experiences designed to bring local history to life. Whether you’re interested in maritime history, pioneer life, architecture, genealogy, lighthouses, or community stories, there is something for everyone during History Days.
The best part? Many events are free or low-cost, making it easy to build your own week-long journey through Door County’s past.
To see everything happening during History Days, be sure to pick up this week’s Peninsula Pulse, which features a complete schedule of events taking place throughout the peninsula. With programs happening from one end of the county to the other, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to learn something new, visit a place you’ve never explored, and celebrate the rich heritage that makes Door County such a special place.
Mark your calendar, invite a friend, and join us as we kick off History Days 2026 next Monday.
