When most people think of Door County, they picture scenic shorelines, towering bluffs, sandy beaches, and iconic lighthouses. But beneath the peninsula’s rugged landscape is another world—one that few people ever get to see.
What if you could explore it without crawling through tight passages or climbing over rocks?
Join us on Monday, July 27, for the Door County Historical Society’s next Dine & Discover program as local cave expert Gary Soule takes us on an unforgettable journey beneath the rock spine of Door County.
Discover the Hidden Belly of Door County
Through an exciting slide presentation, Gary will introduce us to the remarkable caves hidden throughout the peninsula. You’ll learn how these underground spaces were formed, what makes each one unique, and the stories they’ve preserved for thousands—even millions—of years.
From the impressive Horseshoe Bay Cave to Eagle Cave in Peninsula State Park, you’ll see places that most people never experience. Framed displays will reveal the true extent and fascinating history of these underground treasures, while Gary shares decades of firsthand exploration and research.
As Gary says:
“Grab your helmet and lights and prepare to enter the hidden belly of Door County!”
Why Hear It from Gary?
If you’ve heard Gary speak before—or if you already know a little about Door County’s caves—you might be wondering, “Will I learn something new?”
The answer is yes.
Gary has spent decades exploring, documenting, and researching caves throughout Wisconsin. A Sturgeon Bay resident for more than 60 years, he has served as Chairman of the Wisconsin Speleological Society, is a Life Member and Fellow of the National Speleological Society, and serves as a Trustee of the American Spelean History Association. He’s also authored numerous articles and booklets on caves.
This isn’t information you’ll find on a roadside sign or in a travel brochure. It’s an opportunity to learn from someone who has devoted a lifetime to uncovering the stories hidden beneath our feet.
An Evening of Great Food and Great Conversation
Our Dine & Discover programs are about more than the presentation. They’re a chance to enjoy a delicious meal, meet fellow history enthusiasts, and spend an evening learning something new about the place we all love.
Whether you’re an avid kayaker who’s paddled past the sea caves, a geology buff, a lifelong Door County resident, or simply someone who loves discovering the peninsula’s hidden stories, this program is for you.
