Eagle Bluff Lighthouse Campaign for Restoration and Reconstruction

On October 15, 1868, atop a bluff in Fish Creek, the lamp of the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse was lit for the very first time.

Now a National and State Registered Historical Landmark, this iconic lighthouse located in Peninsula State Park, has been a continuous navigational aid for more than 150 years and counting.

After 58 years and 3 different keepers, the light was automated in 1926.

2015 Opening Day

In 1960, the Door County Historical Society led an effort to restore Eagle Bluff Lighthouse and open it as a public museum. Since then, the Society has faithfully maintained and managed the lighthouse, sharing the fascinating story of the light keepers and their families with thousands of visitors each year.

After 63 years, the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse is again in desperate need of major restorative maintenance. A Historic Structure Report, commissioned by the Society in 2019, provides a detailed roadmap for the work that must be done to preserve the site. The Door County Historical Society has once again made a commitment to Eagle Bluff Lighthouse by taking on this restoration project. But we cannot do it alone.

The goal of this project is to accurately restore Eagle Bluff Lighthouse to the time period of the Duclon family’s tenure (1883 – 1918).

By focusing on the Duclon period, we can recreate and reimagine the visitor’s experience to one that is historically accurate. Utilizing the physical site and architecture, we will reinforce the lighthouse’s significant impact on the development of Door County.

Once completed, the Door County Historical Society will have the resources needed to expand outreach efforts and add educational programming opportunities. Eagle Bluff Lighthouse will become a historical resource, as well as a museum.

As a result, Eagle Bluff Lighthouse will attract more visitors and residents to Door County and Peninsula State Park, allowing us to further our reach while increasing the economic impact on the community.

The project will focus on three areas: stabilization, restoration, AND Reconstruction.

1. STABILIZATION

The issues of rising damp and other conditions caused by excess humidity levels in the building must be addressed or the deterioration will rapidly increase and may become irreversible.

Cost $302,400

2. RENOVATION

With increased moisture and no electricity to regulate temperatures and provide ventilation, material deterioration has accelerated. Remedying these will return the building to 100% usability, allowing us to properly repair, restore, refurnish, and interpret these spaces accurately.

Cost $2,100,953

3. RECONSTRUCTION

Reconstruction of buildings that were lost will provide a Visitor Center and areas for educational programs and exhibits that will be accessible to all. The buildings will support modern necessities, while also conveying their historical function.

Cost $897,007

TOTAL COST $3,300,000
