From the Keeper’s Desk – June 2

Greetings!

Lots of different things happened today.

Josh and Deion did a lot of grinding out bad mortar on the privy and oil house ahead of tuck pointing.

Billy and Mike installed louver panel assemblies and trim on the cupola. It looks great.

Mike milled special plastic material for the lower boards on the summer kitchen. They look like the wood siding but will not decay when placed close to or in ground contact like wood would. Mike and Billy installed the first one on the bottom at the east end of the summer kitchen. The next boards moving up will be the wood dutch lap siding.

John, Sandy, Deanna, Chuck and Ed were all busy painting. Chuck painted window trim and the rest of us worked on the lower siding for the barn.

Here is what John said about the painting:

Good start on the barn vertical boards.  Mike is going to start siding the summer kitchen tomorrow, so we have some urgency in getting the remaining staining done.  We went through 4 gallons of stain and did 1/2 of the 90 vertical boards. It looks like the rain will hold off till late tomorrow, so maybe if we all pitch in we can get most of the rest of the barn boards done.

It was another very productive day.

P.S. If you are interested in being part of history and helping with painting, we will be staining the cedar shakes later this week. We welcome additional helpers to get it all done in time for Mike and Billy to install them. Please email Amy at office@doorcountyhistoricalsociety.org to find out more. Thanks!
