From the Keeper’s Desk – update

Greetings!

Catching up on activity since the last Keeper’s Desk on Aug 29.

Josh Fletcher of National Restoration said the window sashes should be ready early the week of Sept 15. When he gets them back from the woodworker they will install glass and then bring them back for installation in the lighthouse.

The electrician team still needs to install outlets and switches on the barn first floor and switch and outlet cover plates throughout the barn. They will also be installing ceiling fans in the barn, and lighting in the barn and summer kitchen when the items arrive.

On Sept 8 Mike and Billy installed thresholds at the doors on the barn and summer kitchen. They are needed for when they install  brush sweeps on the bottom of the doors to provide a weather tight and critter proof seal.

Taylor Elam prepared the hayloft floor by buffing it prior to applying a clear coat finish. It looks fantastic!

We had a wonderful treat Friday when  lighthouse trolley driver Special Ed played the 1852 Chickering piano in Eagle Bluff Light Station. I did not know that Ed plays the piano. That was fun. We call him Special Ed because he is a retired teacher who taught special education kids at Sturgeon Bay High School. We have known Ed for a number of years and he is indeed special. Ed always says when he and I are together at the lighthouse “two Ed’s are better than one”. He is correct.

I thought there was a different bird calling at the light station Friday but Dave pointed out a grey tree frog in the hollow of the lilac tree by the lighthouse. It was the tree frog that I mistook for a bird. The gray tree frog is variable in color. The ability to vary its color provides it with the ability to camouflage itself from gray to green or brown, depending on the environment around it. It really does camouflage itself. If I did not know it was there it looks like part of the tree hollow.

  1. Thanks for the update. Good to know the final touches are getting done.
I also heard that tree frog and thought it was loud for a tree frog.
Yes, two Eds are better than one!
Sorry I missed the concert with Special Ed!
He will have to add that to the trolly tour!
