At a recent planning session, we took a moment to reflect on the remarkable journey of the Door County Historical Society.

Founded on October 1, 1926, when 20 passionate citizens gathered at the Sturgeon Bay Courthouse, the organization quickly grew to become one of the largest county historical societies in Wisconsin—boasting 222 members just 15 months later.
Nearly a century later, we are proud to continue that legacy with 302 membership units, representing about 655 people. We now operate two historic sites—Eagle Bluff Light Station and Heritage Village—employ three permanent and a dozen seasonal staff members, and maintain a growing Endowment Fund of $72,000. Our mission remains steadfast: to collect, maintain, and share the history and heritage of Door County through preservation, education, and programming.
Throughout our history, DCHS has accomplished extraordinary things: placing historical markers around the county, advocating for the park system, publishing The Peninsula, restoring Eagle Bluff Light Station, and creating Heritage Village in partnership with the Crossroads at Big Creek. We offer engaging public programs, host special events, and hold monthly meetings to keep our members connected to our shared past.
As we approach our 100th anniversary in 2026, we’re excited to celebrate our past and reimagine our future. Our goals include increasing awareness, growing membership and volunteer engagement, expanding programs, and boosting our marketing reach.
We’ve already started brainstorming ways to commemorate the centennial year—from new programming and educational outreach to merchandise, special events, and a major celebration on October 1, 2026. Three subcommittees have been formed to focus on PR & Marketing, Outreach & Education, and the Anniversary Event. Anyone interested in getting involved is welcome to join!
We’ve also launched a small but meaningful fundraising initiative: at each monthly dinner program, we’ll collect donations with the goal of raising $100 toward our 100th Anniversary celebration.
With your support, we’ll continue preserving and sharing Door County’s stories for generations to come. To contribute to our 100th Anniversary fund or become a member, please visit www.doorcountyhistoricalsociety.org. Every donation helps our organization grow and thrive.
Here’s to 100 years—and the next 100 to come!
