The Door County Historical Society is excited to welcome the community back to Heritage Village for Opening Day on Saturday, May 23, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Join us for a free day of history, demonstrations, family fun, and hands-on experiences as we kick off another exciting season at one of Door County’s most beloved historic sites.
Step back in time and explore historic buildings that tell the story of rural Door County life in the late 19th century. Throughout the day, visitors can enjoy tours, interactive demonstrations, and opportunities to meet interpreters and volunteers who help bring history to life.
Opening Day activities will include demonstrations in the blacksmith shop, Madden Tool Museum, granary, and schoolhouse. Guests can also visit the heritage garden, where members of the Master Gardeners Association will be on hand to share information and answer questions. Families and children are encouraged to participate in hands-on activities throughout the Village.
Opening Day wouldn’t be complete without an old-fashioned bake sale featuring homemade treats and goodies prepared by volunteers and supporters.
“Opening Day is a wonderful opportunity for people to experience Heritage Village for free and discover everything the site has to offer,” said Wendy Wagner, Heritage Village Site Manager. “We have an exciting season planned with special events, demonstrations, educational programs, and activities for all ages. Whether you’ve visited many times or this is your first trip, there’s always something new to discover.”
Located just outside of Sturgeon Bay, Heritage Village features a collection of historic buildings and artifacts that preserve and share the stories of Door County’s early settlers and communities.
Bring the whole family and celebrate the start of the season with a day filled with history, learning, and fun.
