It was another milestone day at Eagle Bluff Light Station: literally ground-breaking in a sense that the new well was being drilled!
The Door County Historical Society is funding the cost of the well drilling and pump installation. There were DNR public water supply specialists here to observe the drilling. They said the well will be cased to 100 feet and a total of 300 feet deep. Quite a difference when compared to the 70 foot deep well the Lighthouse Service had drilled in 1895.
Drilling techniques were different. Back then the drilling rig was powered by a horse on a treadmill. It could have taken anywhere from two to four weeks to drill the well, Today with the modern drilling rig it will be done in two days.
The roofing company was back to take care of unfinished business. They picked up all the leftover things from the installation of the new roofs on the lighthouse and privy. They also reinstalled the gutter at the roof of the lighthouse kitchen.
The barn welcome center and gift shop looks fantastic for opening day tomorrow.
On Tuesday John planted white lilacs by the corner of the lighthouse kitchen. John and Chuck installed a stove pipe from the wood cook stove to the chimney to complete the installation.
We are ready for opening day tomorrow!
