What does the Declaration of Independence have to do with Door County?
You might be surprised.
Join the Door County Historical Society on Monday, June 15, at 10:00 a.m. at Heritage Village in Sturgeon Bay as we kick off History Days 2026—a weeklong celebration of the people, places, and events that have shaped our community.
This year’s theme, America at 250, explores the lasting impact of the Declaration of Independence and the ways its ideals influenced the development of Door County. From early settlement and industry to civic life and community traditions, you’ll discover how national history and local history are deeply connected.
The free Kick-Off Event begins in the Collins Learning Center with a special presentation. A highlight of the morning will be a keynote presentation by Eric Morgan, UW–Green Bay history professor and Editor-in-Chief of Voyager Magazine. Drawing connections between America’s founding document and local history, Morgan will examine how the ideals of liberty, equality, and self-government have shaped Door County’s people, communities, and institutions over the past 250 years. You’ll also get a sneak peek at the many History Days programs, exhibits, tours, and special events taking place across the county throughout the week.
After the presentation, the fun continues throughout Heritage Village. Meet representatives from Door County’s historical and cultural organizations, learn about the fascinating work they do and discover new places to explore during History Days.
While you’re here, take time to wander through Heritage Village’s historic buildings, watch the blacksmith at work, try your hand at historic tools in the Madden Tool Museum, and enjoy refreshments with fellow history enthusiasts.
Whether you’re a lifelong resident, a seasonal visitor, or simply curious about the stories behind the places you love, History Days offers something for everyone.
“History Days is a wonderful opportunity to discover the remarkable organizations that preserve Door County’s unique heritage,” said Amy Frank, Executive Director of the Door County Historical Society. “The Kick-Off Event is the perfect place to begin a week of exploration, learning, and appreciation for the people, places, and stories that make Door County special.”
Every attendee will receive information about programs happening throughout History Days, making it easy to plan your own journey through Door County’s past.
So mark your calendar, gather your friends and family, and join us as we celebrate the stories that connect us to one another—and to the generations who came before us.
