What does the Declaration of Independence mean to you?
As our nation prepares to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Door County Historical Society invites you to explore that question during a special week of programs at Heritage Village, June 15–21, 2026.
As part of History Days 2026, a countywide celebration organized by the Heritage Alliance of Door County, Heritage Village will host a variety of exhibits, discussions, tours, and hands-on experiences designed to connect our local history to the larger American story. Whether you’re a lifelong history enthusiast or simply looking for a meaningful way to engage with your community, there is something for everyone.

America@250 Community Conversations
Tuesday, June 16 | 6:00–8:00 p.m.
Thursday, June 18 | 6:00–8:00 p.m.
History isn’t just about the past—it’s also about the conversations we have today.
During two different America@250 Community Conversations, participants will view thematic clips from The American Revolution, the new documentary series by Ken Burns, Sarah Botstein, and David Schmidt, before engaging in guided small-group discussions.
These welcoming conversations are designed to bring people together to listen, learn, and reflect on topics such as citizenship, volunteerism, military service, civic participation, public leadership, and what it means to be an American. Participants do not need to be history experts—just willing to share, listen, and learn from one another. This event is free and open to the public.

History That Connects Us
The ideals expressed in the Declaration of Independence have influenced generations of Americans and helped shape communities across the country—including right here in Door County. During History Days, Heritage Village offers a unique opportunity to explore those connections through conversation, storytelling, food, exhibits, and hands-on experiences.
“History comes alive when we connect it to our own lives and experiences,” says Amy Frank, Executive Director of the Door County Historical Society. “Whether you’re exploring a historic building, sharing a family recipe, discussing what it means to be an American, or reflecting on the Declaration of Independence, these programs provide meaningful opportunities to engage with our past and consider how it continues to influence our future.”
We hope you’ll join us as we celebrate Wisconsin History Week, Door County History Days, and America’s 250th anniversary. Together, we’ll explore the stories that shaped our nation—and continue to shape our community today.
