On Saturday, June 13, the community is invited to gather at Bayside Cemetery in Sturgeon Bay for a special observance marking the cemetery’s 150th anniversary. This meaningful event celebrates not only a century and a half of service to local families, but also the countless stories of the people who helped build Door County.
Founded in 1876, Bayside Cemetery has long been one of Door County’s most significant historic places. Situated along Bay Shore Drive overlooking the waters of Sturgeon Bay, the cemetery serves as the final resting place for many of the county’s pioneers, shipbuilders, business leaders, public officials, veterans, and everyday citizens whose lives shaped our community. Today, more than 8,000 individuals are buried within its peaceful grounds.
The 150th Anniversary Memorial Observance begins at 2:00 p.m. and will feature a presentation on the history of the cemetery, patriotic music, guided tours highlighting notable individuals buried at Bayside, and special tributes honoring veterans. The program will also include a gun salute and the playing of Taps in recognition of the more than 2,000 veterans interred there.
The observance is especially significant this year as it coincides with the Door County Historical Society’s Centennial and America’s 250th anniversary commemorations. Historical graveside portrayals presented by members of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Door County Historical Society will help bring local history to life, connecting visitors with the people and stories that have shaped our nation, state, and county.
Historic cemeteries are more than places of remembrance—they are outdoor museums that preserve the stories of generations past. Every monument, inscription, and family plot offers a glimpse into the lives, challenges, and achievements of those who came before us. As we celebrate 150 years of Bayside Cemetery, we honor not only those buried there, but also the enduring importance of preserving our shared history for future generations.
The Door County Historical Society encourages everyone to attend this special community observance and take time to explore the rich history found among the stones of one of Door County’s most treasured historic landscapes.
