Experience Door County as it was more than a century ago.
What was it like to live in Door County between 1880 and 1910? How did families make butter, harvest their crops, worship together, write letters home, or earn a living on the water?
On Saturday, August 15, the Door County Historical Society invites you to discover the answers during Heritage Day at Heritage Village. From 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the village will come alive with hands-on activities, demonstrations, music, storytelling, and friendly competitions that bring local history to life for visitors of every age.
This isn’t a day of simply looking at old buildings—it’s a chance to step inside them and experience history the way our ancestors did.
As you explore Heritage Village, you’ll discover how early settlers raised and used the grains that sustained their families. See crops growing as they would have appeared in the field, learn how they were harvested and stored, and discover the many ways they became food for the table.
Stop by the chapel to experience one of the most important gathering places in an early community. Hear the hymns they sang, learn why faith was such a central part of pioneer life, and imagine what a Sunday service might have been like more than 100 years ago.
The village blacksmith will be hard at work at the forge, demonstrating the skills that kept farms, wagons, and households functioning. You’ll gain a new appreciation for one of the most important trades in an agricultural community.
History becomes deeply personal inside the Warren House, where you’ll learn about one of Door County’s pioneering families through letters exchanged during the Civil War. Their words remind us that history isn’t just about famous events—it’s about ordinary people whose lives were forever changed by extraordinary times.
Feeling inspired? Write your own postcard to a family member the old-fashioned way and imagine what communication was like long before email, text messages, or social media.
Want to get your hands dirty? Try churning butter and discover why this everyday chore required plenty of patience and elbow grease. Then head over to learn about the lives of Door County’s commercial fishermen at the close of the 19th century. Practice rope-tying techniques that were once essential skills on the water and hear how generations of fishermen made their living on the Great Lakes.
Of course, Heritage Day isn’t all work!
Challenge your family to an old-fashioned Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest, browse the shelves of the General Store, admire the community quilt project, and spend the afternoon wandering through one of Door County’s most authentic collections of historic buildings.
