See Door County Like You’ve Never Seen It Before

Have you ever wondered what Door County looks like from 2,000 feet in the air?

You probably know your favorite beaches, parks, harbors, and scenic overlooks—but seeing them from above is an entirely different experience. Suddenly, familiar landmarks take on a whole new perspective, hidden shipwrecks become visible beneath crystal-clear waters, and the unique geography of our peninsula comes into focus.

That’s exactly what you’ll experience at the Door County Historical Society’s next Dine & Discover program on Monday, August 24, at the Kress Pavilion in Egg Harbor.

Our featured speaker, Dr. Glen Tanck, will take us on “A View From Above: An Aerial Tour of Northern Door County – Gills Rock to Sturgeon Bay.” Through approximately 70 breathtaking aerial photographs captured from about 2,000 feet above the peninsula, Glen will guide us along Door County’s dramatic shorelines, picturesque islands, and even reveal shipwrecks resting beneath the waters of Lake Michigan and Green Bay.

Glen’s connection to Door County makes this presentation especially meaningful. He grew up on a farm and orchard just south of Egg Harbor before pursuing degrees in geology at the University of Wisconsin, a career in petroleum geology, a Ph.D. from the University of Arizona, and 15 years teaching geology at Palo Alto College in San Antonio. Today, he’s back where it all began, sharing his passion for Door County through photography and storytelling.

Whether you’ve lived in Door County your entire life or visit every summer, you’re almost guaranteed to see something you’ve never noticed before. It’s a chance to appreciate the peninsula’s beauty and geology in a way that few people ever get to experience.

As always, Dine & Discover is more than just a presentation—it’s an evening of great food, interesting conversation, and the opportunity to connect with others who share a love of Door County history.
