A bountiful Season at Heritage Garden

The growing season may be winding down, but there’s still work to be done in the Heritage Garden at Heritage Village!

Thanks to the care and dedication of our garden volunteers, more than 235 pounds of produce have been harvested from the garden so far this season—and we’re not finished yet.

Master Gardeners and volunteers Ruth, Donna, and Dina have spent countless hours planting, tending, weeding, watering, and harvesting throughout the season. Their work keeps the Heritage Garden thriving while also helping us demonstrate an important part of everyday life in Door County’s past.

The garden is more than a beautiful part of Heritage Village. It gives visitors an opportunity to see the kinds of skills, traditions, and hard work that once went into putting food on the table. Long before a quick trip to the grocery store, families depended upon what they could grow, preserve, store, and prepare for the months ahead.

And harvest time certainly didn’t mean the work was over! Fall brought its own long list of chores as families gathered the last crops, preserved what they could, prepared gardens for winter, and planned for the next growing season.

Our volunteers continue that cycle today. Even as this year’s harvest begins to slow, there is still plenty to do before the Heritage Garden is put to bed for another Door County winter.

We are incredibly grateful to Ruth, Donna, Dina, and everyone who has lent a hand in the garden this year. More than 235 pounds harvested is quite an accomplishment—and a wonderful reminder of what a little patch of ground, a lot of hard work, and some very dedicated volunteers can produce!

Thank you for helping us keep Door County’s agricultural traditions growing at Heritage Village.
