Digging Up the Past: Discover the Stories Behind the Stones at October’s Dine & Discover

Every gravestone marks a life, but how do we uncover the stories of the people buried beneath them? What can old newspapers, historical records, and a little detective work reveal about the people who helped shape our communities?

Join the Door County Historical Society on Monday, October 26, at 6 p.m. at Door County Fire Company for our next Dine & Discover program, Grave Digging: Researching a Life Story, featuring historian and historical interpreter Dennis R. Jacobs.

Just in time for Halloween, this fascinating presentation will explore the process of bringing history to life, one person at a time. Have you ever attended a cemetery walk and wondered how the presenters uncovered so many interesting details about the people they portray? Jacobs will take us behind the scenes to reveal the research methods that make these stories possible.

Beginning with basic genealogy research, Jacobs will demonstrate how to follow the clues found in historical records, newspapers, and other sources. Along the way, researchers may uncover remarkable accomplishments, surprising family connections, forgotten tragedies, or even a scandal or two!

A lifelong history enthusiast, Jacobs has worked with several historical organizations in the Green Bay area, including Heritage Hill, the UW–Green Bay Archives and Area Research Center, the Neville Public Museum, and the Brown County Library’s Local History and Genealogy Department. His extensive experience researching and interpreting history gives him a unique perspective on uncovering the personal stories behind historical events.

Whether you’re interested in genealogy, local history, cemetery walks, or simply enjoy a good mystery, this program will provide practical tips and inspiration for discovering the stories of those who came before us.
