A Turning Point for Sturgeon Bay: The Complicated End of WWII

Within months of World War II ending, Sturgeon Bay faced an existential crisis. During the war, local shipyards had been operating at “full throttle,” building ships that supported the Allied war effort. But when the war ended, the government contracts that fueled that activity disappeared almost overnight. The once-bustling shipyards went quiet, and the community’s economic engine was suddenly in jeopardy.

What happened next was a pivotal moment in Door County history.

On Saturday, March 28 at noon, the Door County Historical Society invites you to explore this dramatic chapter during our monthly Dine & Discover program at the Door County Maritime Museum.

Our featured speaker, Kevin Osgood, President & CEO of the Maritime Museum, will present “Sturgeon Bay’s Complicated Ending to WWII.” His program reveals the lesser-known story of a community standing at a crossroads. With the future uncertain, shipyard leaders were forced to make difficult, all-or-nothing decisions. Longtime competitors had to set aside rivalries and begin collaborating in order to survive.

Those choices reshaped the peninsula’s future—helping transform Door County from a wartime industrial hub into the world-class tourism destination we know today.

This wasn’t simply a transition. It was a race against time, and the decisions made in those crucial months after 1945 continue to shape the Door Peninsula to this day.

As the Door County Historical Society celebrates its 100th anniversary, this program will also include a brief “Highlights of Our History” segment. Throughout the year, these short presentations will share memorable moments from the Society’s past—recognizing the people, projects, and milestones that have shaped our organization over the last century and helped preserve Door County’s rich heritage.

Guests will enjoy a delicious luncheon catered by Bluefront Cafe while exploring the resilience and transformation of our community.
