Having been a resident for well over 60 years now, I have seen Door County slowly evolve into the popular "Cape Cod" of the Midwest. While Fish Creek always seemed to be a mecca for tourists, Sister Bay has grown more. But what is worth noting is that Egg Harbor, and particularly Carlsville, has really exploded in size. I still remember Gills Rock as being where the Washington Island ferries took off from prior to the greatly improved dock facilities at Northport. The same goes for beneath the Door Peninsula. Horseshoe Bay Cave in June of 1964, was explored to a distance of 1,740 feet in length. Today it is explored and mapped to 3,103 feet long, and it still goes! It is not only the deepest Door County underground cave at 129 feet beneath the surface above, but it is the longest wild, or undeveloped, cave in all of Wisconsin! While nothing existed at Crossroads at Big Creek, the proposal for the location of a possible shopping center caused the land to quickly be bought and preserved for school tours. Today, even the Heritage Village exists, preserving historic buildings moved to the site for permanent preservation.
