Greetings!
Taylor completed work on the floors in the lighthouse kitchen, parlor and music room. The kitchen had all the old finish sanded off to bare wood followed by three coats of finish. The floors in the parlor and music room were buffed before applying three coats of finish. Buffing entailed a light sanding to remove some of the old finish layer but not enough to remove the patina the floor developed over time. Thank you Taylor for excellent work. He is planning to be back next Thursday to work on floors in the other lighthouse rooms.
Jeanne has been busy painting in the 2nd floor bedroom. The doors and trim have a fresh coat of paint. The walls and ceiling will be getting a second coat of paint Monday. Thank you Jeanne, it looks fantastic.
The refrigerator arrived and Chuck and I installed it in its place under the sales counter. It fit perfectly! It is for water and any other beverages we will be selling in the barn. It has a glass door and will be self serve.
Welcome Renee Thibodeau, our new EBLS assistant manager (gift shop operations). Amy and Renee brought the new sales system, and slat wall hardware and shelves. The new sales system is going to make life in the gift shop a lot easier. It has a bar code reader as all items will be bar coded. It has a cash drawer that goes under the counter and only opens for cash sales. On the counter there is a two sided display so the customer can also see the transaction and there is a printer for customer receipts.
Sometime soon we will be getting new roofs on the lighthouse and privy. The privy will be getting a standing seam red metal roof based on historic photos of our privy. The lighthouse will be getting red Victorian metal shingles. These shingles have been used historically at lighthouses in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. They can be seen on many Great Lakes lighthouses. The new shingles are the same as the shingle used back then. The company that made them years ago still makes that same shingle. Among others, they are on our sister lighthouses at Eagle Harbor, Sand Island and McGulpin Point.

Wow! I’m in awe of such wonderful upgrades in the gift shop. Back in the day we dreamed about a refrigerator as our fearless leader, Linda, hauled ice to keep water cold. These changes are magical and will make working there so much easier!! Thank you for sharing these exciting changes. Thanks for all the hard work to get things in line before opening in May.
